Public Works & Construction
The St. Matthews Public Works Department is located in the maintenance facility in the eastern section of Community Park, just off of Ten Pen Lane. St. Matthews Public Works consists of two branches, the works and construction.
The works group is made up of nine full time employees and is supervised by Terry Ridgeway who has been an employee and resident of St. Matthews for over 30 years. These employees provide service to our residents and business on a daily basis. Their responsibilities include tasks such as street patching, ice and snow control, minor storm-sewer repairs, installation of regulatory and identification signs, emergency storm services, tree planting, mowing, taking care of the parks, city building maintenance, graffiti removal and all other calls for service within the city.
During the summer and fall months, the works branch may utilize seasonal help. Summer is a busy time, as this branch of public works is responsible for maintaining the four major parks. They are responsible for many of the green spaces and floral islands throughout the city, along with all other functions of the department. When Fall season occurs, these workers carry out the city’s leaf pick up program, where they utilize large vacuums to remove piles of leaves that have been placed along the street edges by residents. This can be a challenging and lengthy process, due to possible inclement weather conditions and the unpredictability of the trees to shed their leaves in a timely fashion.
The construction branch of the St. Matthews Public Works Department is headed by supervisor Dennis Fletcher and Mr. Jim Birch, the city of St. Matthews Engineer. There are currently seven people, who make up this team, all with many years of working experience and knowledge in the construction field. The construction branch is responsible for new installation and maintenance of storm water drainage, sidewalk repairs and new installations, along with other construction related concerns. In addition, the construction team is utilized in various other construction like activities, as needed for the upkeep of city property and services.
