Professional Business Licenses and Business License tax
Per City of St. Matthews ordinance, persons conducting business in the city must have a business license. To obtain a copy or view the ordinance in it’s entirety, visit the city administrative office, third floor, in the St. Matthews City Hall, 3940 Grandview Ave, between Breckenridge and Browns Lanes or click here.
Business licenses are required for all businesses located in the City of St. Matthews and/or businesses coming into the city to conduct work. Each separate location must apply for their individual licensing. Each business location in the City of St. Matthews is to report gross receipts from that location and payment made accordingly. Filing fee for a first year of business or part thereof is $25.00. Subsequent renewal fees are based on gross receipts. Note that receipts from the sale of alcoholic beverages are not to be computed in the gross receipts.

The St. Matthews Gross Receipts Business License Tax Application is to be completed and payment due on April 30th of each year, and will be considered delinquent on May 1st. This is applicable to both calendar year and fiscal year end filings.
The St. Matthews City Council has approved a discount of 50 percent for all payments on business license tax paid by April 30th, of each year. Payments received after that date are subject to full amount due.
All checks must be made payable to City of St. Matthews and mailed along with the applicable IRS forms to CITY OF ST. MATTHEWS, BUSINESS LICENSE DEPARTMENT, P. O. BOX 7097, LOUISVILLE, KY., 40257-0097.

Real Estate Taxes
The St. Matthews City Council has made every effort to establish and maintain a moderate ad valorem tax rate. For many years, the property tax rate has been reduced from $.25 to $.20 per $100 of assessed value. The city also offers a 40% discount to be given on all tax bills if paid on or before October 31. This annual reduction rate, along with the generous discount, gives the City of St. Matthews one of the lowest, if not the lowest, tax rate in the county.
The City of St. Matthews utilizes the yearly valuation figures provided by the Jefferson County Property Valuation Administration. St. Matthews also recognizes the Homestead Exemption available to property owners disabled or 65 years of age or older, provided the required application is on file at city hall. The homestead exemption rate is set by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is equal to the rate utilized by the Jefferson County tax program.

Occupational Taxes
Per City of St. Matthews ordinance, all person working within the City of St. Matthews are required to pay an occupational tax fee of .75% on gross wages and commissions earned in St.Matthews.

An Application Questionnaire is to be completed in order to establish an account for reporting employee withholding tax. This form, along with the form for Annual Reconciliation can be obtained at the city administrative office or click here.
Applications can be submitted in person or by mailing to City of St. Matthews, 3940 Grandview Avenue, St. Matthews, Kentucky, 40207. All Occupational Tax withheld from employee wages are to be submitted to the City of St. Matthews quarterly.

Property Taxes
Property taxes for the City of St. Mathews can be paid in person at city hall located at 3940 Grandview Avenue, between Breckenridge and Browns Lanes. The city offices are open Monday thru Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
You may remit your tax due by mailing to: City of St. Matthews, PO Box 7097, Louisville, Ky. 40257-0097. Your remittance must be postmarked by the required dates, listed on your property tax bill, to qualify for any discounts or to avoid any penalty or interest.
All checks should show Property ID number or tax bill number and be make payable to City of St. Matthews.
